I was born in 1956 and raised on a small farm in Michigan. After graduating from college with degrees in Electrical Engineering and Forestry, I elected to join the Marine Corps to become a pilot. I flew the A4 Skyhawk, the same jet the instructors flew in the movie Top Gun. I spent seven years on active duty and eight years in the reserves, earning early retirement in 1994. In 1993, I started flying freight for Fedex. I've flown the B727, DC10, and MD11 throughout the US, Europe, Asia, Mexico, Canada, and South America. I even did an around the world trip in 6 days. Currently, I am a MD11 captain. I am fortunate to live in Montana, where I am the father of two fantastic kids. My youngest child is autistic, which is why I donate to the Autism Research Institute and why I usually feature an autistic character in my books.
Although always interested in writing, I didn't start writing seriously until 1987 when I got off active duty. Like most writers, my work reflects my life experiences. Write what you know, the writing teachers teach. What I have learned over the years is life is a wonderful journey with many ups and downs that offer valuable lessons. I write to entertain, inspire, and foster hope and goodness. Write on!
1. When did you know you wanted to become an author?
When I got off active duty from the Marine Corps. I took a writing class that led to a fictional romance short story, which was published by a singles magazine. A close friend cried when she read the story because of the emotions it stirred in her. I thought, wow, if I can evoke a response like that, imagine what I could do by polishing my craft even further.
2. How long did it take to write Jack's Last Promise?
The initial draft took one week. The words just flowed out of me.
3. How did it feel when you finished it?
Fantastic! A very fulfilling accomplishment.
4. Are there other books in the works?
Yes. I have written two others, which I am still polishing. I hope to publish them soon because I still have even more stories I want to write. Stay tuned!
5. Do you have any tips for new authors?
Yes. If you believe you are a writer, then you are. Don’t ever let anyone deter you from following your dreams.
6. What makes a great story in your opinion?
You have to have characters that people care about and a story that grabs their attention and holds it like a vise.
7. Can you describe the feeling of becoming a published author?
Hooray! My work is worthy enough for everyone to see.
8. When you first saw the cover sign for your book, what did you feel?
Pride and joy.
